The bamboo e-cargo trike: when the bike is the business

Context

A lot of small craft businesses quietly assume they need a van. Get to the fair, carry the workbench, the tools and the pop-up stand — and pay for the hire, the fuel and the low-emission-zone charge every time. We wanted to know whether a bamboo cargo bike could do that job instead.

What we did

We designed and built a bamboo e-cargo trike in-house as an R&D project — a three-wheeled bamboo frame with a flat load platform, built from thick Guada bamboo so it carries weight without flexing. It started as a response to a neighbouring delivery business's needs, and grew into our reference design for what a bamboo cargo frame can do. The build was documented and shared, and the same platform has since fed into our university design-education work (UCL Masters projects and others).

Verified outcome

• A working bamboo e-cargo trike, built and documented by Bamboo Bicycle Club.
• A reusable cargo-frame design that has gone on to support applied design-education projects with university students.
• A real-world demonstration that a bamboo frame can carry a serious load — a city's "van trips" (the school run, the last mile, the weekly shop) without the van.
