Recognised programme: Bamboo Bicycle Club at HMP Lowdham Grange

Published: 5 September 2025

We’re proud that our prison education work has been recognised by the national press and government, with recent coverage in the Financial Times and public support from James Timpson, Prisons Minister. The programme delivers hands‑on, skills‑based learning that helps people reconnect with education, rebuild confidence and prepare for work on release.

What the programme does

At HMP Lowdham Grange (Nottinghamshire) we’ve established a 2,000 sq ft on‑site workshop and run a six‑week, four‑hours‑per‑day course. Learners progress from workshop safety and material science to bamboo frame construction, mechanics, finishing and enterprise basics. The focus is on making a real, rideable bicycle while developing teamwork, problem‑solving and pride in achievement.

“I don’t want everyone to go out and be a bike builder. I want them to be like, ‘I’m really interested in the engineering of this, I’m going to do an engineering course,’ or ‘I’m really interested in the look of this, I’m going to do a graphic design course.’” — James Marr, Founder

Why it matters

  • Prison education has faced overcrowding and staffing pressures; purposeful activity is hard to access.

  • Practical, creative programmes re‑engage learners and open pathways into further study and employment.

  • Bamboo bikes have a “cool factor” that motivates participation and attendance.

Recognition and support

Our approach has been highlighted publicly:

Innovative projects, such as Build to Bond, support rehabilitation and help people leave prison as better citizens, boosting the economy and keeping our streets safe.” — James Timpson, Prisons Minister

The bamboo bike course offers more than just technical training — it provides an avenue for creativity, teamwork, and self‑expression.” — Sally Allsopp, Industries Manager, HMP Lowdham Grange

This recognition reflects the dedication of our learners and staff, and the strong partnership with the prison’s industries team.

Build to Bond: connecting families through making

We’re piloting Build to Bond, a two‑week course where participants create balance bikes for their children. Beyond technical skills, the goal is to strengthen family relationships — building confidence and communication that supports rehabilitation.

Measurable outcomes we’re tracking

  • Engagement: attendance and course completion rates

  • Skills: practical competencies (materials, mechanics, finishing)

  • Progression: referrals into engineering, design or business courses

  • Wellbeing: learner self‑confidence and teamwork indicators

We’ll publish anonymised impact snapshots as the programme grows.
