Cycling Electric: A flatpack e-cargo bike? Bamboo Bicycle Club aim to revolutionise city transport

In November 2023, Cycling Electric featured our flatpack bamboo e-cargo bike — a working answer to the question of how you deliver goods around a city without the fuel, the emissions or the congestion charge.

What they covered

Writing for Cycling Electric, Myles Warwood looked at the e-cargo bike we designed to be ordered, flat-packed and built at home — or built with us in the workshop. The piece set out the core idea: a sustainable cargo bike businesses can adapt to their own needs rather than a fixed, off-the-shelf machine.

The bike, as reported

  • A 250kg load capacity.
  • A frame using 100mm Guadua bamboo.
  • A rear box made from recyclable modular sheets, so it can be reconfigured for whatever a business needs to carry.
  • The Bamboo Bicycle Club model: order it, then build your own at home from a pack, or come to the workshop and build it with us.

The aim, as the headline put it, was to help revolutionise city transport — cutting fuel costs and emissions for the businesses moving goods through increasingly low-emission cities.

Why it matters

The e-cargo bike takes everything we teach — building a strong, repairable frame from a fast-growing natural material — and points it at a real-world problem: greener last-mile delivery. It is the same Bamboo Bicycle Club idea, scaled up to carry a load. Since 2012, more than 4,000 people across 36 countries have built bamboo frames with us.
