The Swiss Family Tandem: A Three-Person Bamboo Bike for the School Run

It started as bamboo tubes, jigs, and wrapping tape in a home workshop in Switzerland. It became a three-person tandem that stops people in the street every morning.

The Build

The builder wanted a sustainable, enjoyable way to travel with his family. Not a cargo bike. Not a standard tandem. A three-seat bamboo tandem, built by hand, adapted from BBC's home kit methodology into something no catalogue has ever offered. Over several weeks, his home workshop became, in his words, "a small bamboo factory."

Every joint was carefully mitred, bonded, and wrapped. Each tube section was finished in a different colour — red, orange, yellow, green, blue — one per tube, turning the frame into something between a vehicle and a piece of art. The result: a structurally sound, three-person daily transport machine, built in a home workshop on another continent by a person with no prior framebuilding experience.
