Three Hours, Twelve Leaders, One Bamboo Frame: Four Seasons Hampshire
Share
Twelve senior managers at Four Seasons Hotel Hampshire spent three hours building a bamboo bicycle frame. Directors from Rooms, F&B, and Spa worked shoulder to shoulder in the hotel's events barn, which BBC converted into a mobile workshop for the afternoon.
The Build
The kit: pre-cut Tonkin bamboo, stainless-steel frame jigs, Japanese pull saws, files, biodegradable epoxy, and a room of people who had never cut bamboo before. Each pair was assigned a section of the frame — seat stays, down tube, chain stays. They measured, marked, and cut to ±1mm accuracy. They mitered each joint with files and sandpaper until no daylight showed between tubes. By the end of hour three, the frame was in the jig and curing.
Every participant signed the inside of the seat tube — a hidden team signature for the rider who will eventually roll this bike down the lanes of Hampshire.
Why It Works
Corporate team building is often judged on one outcome: did it bring the team together? BBC adds a second: where does the bike go afterwards? The Four Seasons session produced a tangible, lasting, verifiable outcome. Not a trust fall. Not a shared experience that disappears when the hotel room is vacated. A bicycle frame, assembled from a grass, with twelve signatures inside it.
"In just three hours, twelve senior managers swapped spreadsheets for spoke keys — discovering firsthand how fast raw bamboo can turn into a ride-ready frame."
— BBC blog, April 2025
Outcomes
- 12 senior managers, 3 hours, 1 completed bamboo frame
- Cross-departmental collaboration: Rooms, F&B, Spa directors
- Sustainability learning embedded in the build: material science, carbon sequestration
- Tangible lasting outcome: a rideable frame signed by the whole team
- Mobile workshop format: deliverable at any corporate venue
BBC's corporate programme is available for teams of any size, at BBC's London workshop or at a client venue. Every session produces something real. No team building session has ever produced a signed bicycle frame before — because no other team building company builds bicycles from bamboo.
