Team Limitless: bamboo bikes built by hand, ridden across the Pyrenees

The riders of Team Limitless built their own 29er bamboo touring bikes with us at the Bamboo Bicycle Club, then loaded them up and rode across the Pyrenees.

The project

Limitless is a low-impact travel project — the idea is to cover long distances under your own power, on equipment you understand because you made it. Becca, one of the team's builders, came to the workshop and built a 29er touring frame set up for self-supported riding, with racks front and rear for carrying everything a long trip needs.

What we did

We ran the build the way we always do: the riders made the frames themselves, by hand, learning every joint and tube as they went. The result was a set of 29er touring bikes built for loaded, off-tarmac travel rather than speed.

The ride

With the bikes finished, the team headed for the Pyrenees and crossed the range on them — long climbs, loaded panniers, camping along the way. They rode the bikes they had built.

Why it matters

There's a particular kind of confidence that comes from riding a bike you made with your own hands across a mountain range. It is also a lighter way to travel: a bamboo frame, built once and ridden for years.
