What made you decide to build a bamboo bike?
I was on vacation in France when I saw a bamboo bike. At that moment I knew, that I wanted to build one by myself. Half a year later, I had an assignment in 8th grade, where I had to build something of my own choice. So I chose to build my dream bike.
Did you enjoy building the bicycle from scratch and would you recommend the experience?
Yes, i really enjoyed the build. I learned a lot about working with alternative materials, and i learned so much about bicycles.
What was the easiest part of the build?
I don't think that there was anything easy with the build.
What advice would you give to other bamboo bike builders and what would you improve if anything?
Make sure that the bamboo tubes don't have any small cracks, because they will get a lot bigger when time goes by. Also, make sure to be really careful when you drill the holes for the bottle holder. I cracked my entire down tube that way. After a bit more than a year of the build, nearly all of my tubes have got cracks, but it has not made the frame more unstable. And make sure that your fork fits the head tube before you build the frame.
Of improvements, I would make the instruction manual easier and more clear to understand. And the head tube should have another shape (ore you should be able to choose which shape you want), so that modern forks fit well. I had to buy a new fork, because the one that I got had a different shape.
How would you describe the ride of your finished bike?
I simply love it, and I am happy every time i drive it. I am really proud that i build a bike by myself, and it gets a lot of attention. Its my most loved object that i own!
