A Family Ride Like No Other: The Swiss Bamboo Tandem
One of our home-build kit customers in Switzerland did something we had never quite seen before: he took the standard Bamboo Bicycle Club home kit and adapted it into a custom three-seat tandem — a bike built to carry his whole family.
What he built
Working at home over several weeks, he turned a kit of bamboo tubes, jigs and wrapping tape into a finished frame — every joint mitred, bonded and wrapped by hand, following the home-build method but scaling it up to three seats. He finished each section in a different bright colour — red, orange, yellow, green and blue — so the whole bike reads as one cheerful streak of paint.
Where it goes
It is a working family bike, not a show piece. He uses it for the school run, for hauling gear on family holidays, and for scenic rides through the Swiss countryside — strong enough for everyday use, light and smooth enough to enjoy.
Why it matters
This is exactly what the home-build kit is for: not a single fixed product off a shelf, but a method people can adapt to their own lives — even into a three-person tandem for the school run. Switzerland is one of the 36-plus countries where our builders have put a self-made bamboo frame on the road.
