What made you decide to build a bamboo bike?

I like to make things and to cycle. So the thought of being able to make my own bicycle was very appealing. I also wanted to get a long tail cargo bike, and looking at the alternatives, this seemed more affordable than anything else.

Did you enjoy building the bicycle from scratch and would you recommend the experience?

It took much longer than I expected. In the first instance it was exciting and new. After a while I wanted it to end already. However, now that the bike is all done, it is a good feeling AND you can ride it!

What did you find most difficult about your bike build?

There a few things that found difficult:
1. Making sure you have the right equipment. That’s a big one. You realise that adds to your costs.
2. Making sure the bike is straight and aligned on the jig.
3. I live in a flat, so finding a place to build was a challenge as it is MESSY.
4. Making sure the components you have work with the frame well.

What was the easiest part of the build?

Buying the kit.

How would you describe the ride of your finished bike?

It is surprisingly solid, and will take quite a bit of load. I like the seated position and the overall bouncy feel.

What would you improve about the build experience or your finished bike?

I would have preferred to have the jig standing up as opposed to laying flat on a table. This way it is much easier to wrap the flax material. I would have also spent more time making sure the wrapping is super tidy, as it saves loads of time on finishing.
