A Simpler Jig for Building Your Flax Frame at Home
Context
The hardest part of building a bamboo frame is keeping every tube in exactly the right place while the joints are wrapped and cured. That is the job of the alignment jig. After years of teaching people to build at home, in classrooms, in workshops and in prisons, we redesigned the jig that ships with our flax-build kits to make that setup as simple as possible.
What we did
We rebuilt the flax-kit jig as a flat-pack design that assembles on any tabletop — no separate base board required. It packs flat for easier transport and goes together quickly, so you spend less time setting up and more time building. It is the latest in a long line of jig refinements: every version we have made has come from real feedback in our workshops and from home builders, and each one has used fewer parts, set up faster and left a cleaner workspace.
For anyone building more than one frame, we also offer a separate, more robust reusable workshop jig — the same tool our workshop leaders and partner sites use.
Verified outcome
The jig holds your tubes in accurate geometric alignment so that even a first-time builder can achieve a straight, true frame. The redesign keeps the kit's footprint minimal while making home assembly noticeably more straightforward.
Verified quote
"A frame-building jig holds bamboo tubes in exact geometric alignment while they are joined together. Without a jig, consistent frame geometry is near-impossible. With one, even first-time builders can achieve professional results."
Why it matters
The jig is where our teaching knowledge lives — every build we have ever run has shaped it. Making it flat-pack and tabletop-friendly is what lets people build a real bamboo frame on a kitchen table, in a classroom or in a workshop, rather than only in a professional fabrication shop. The simpler the tool, the more people can pick it up.
