What made you decide to build a bamboo bike?

I love mountain biking but have never really gotten into urban cycling and didn’t own a road bike. On top of that I enjoy a good DIY project on the side. So I saw building my own bamboo bike as a cool project that might also be a good incentive to do more road cycling.

Did you enjoy building the bicycle from scratch and would you recommend the experience?

I really enjoyed the build, it was awesome to see the frame take shape! I’d definitely recommend people give it a go, with the caveat that it does require a wee bit more time and effort than just picking up a second-hand bike off the internet.

What did you find most difficult about your bike build?

For me, the bamboo tube mitering was the slowest and maybe the hardest part of the build. Possibly because I’m a bit of a perfectionist, so getting the fit spot on was a pain at times.

What was the easiest part of the build?

Probably shopping online for all of the bike components, or bolting them on once the frame was done... Actually though, as far as the frame build went - I’d say sanding the lugs (once I’d managed to find a narrow belt-sander to borrow).

What advice would you give to other bamaboo bike builders and what would you improve if anything?

Maybe some advice for perfectionist builders like myself - embrace the crooked nature of the bamboo and allow the imperfections and unique character of your bike to show through. Will save you some hours!

On the bike, compatibility with a tapered fork and through-axle rear end would've been handy. But these options are now available with the kits, so maybe next time!

How would you describe the ride of your finished bike?

My road bike experience is pretty limited, but it feels great to me! Very smooth & sprightly, with a hint of flex. Super proud of what I’ve managed to create!
