Alex's Gravel Bike

Alex's Gravel Bike
What made you decide to build a bamboo bike?
It looked like a great and challenging project.

Did you enjoy building the bicycle from scratch and would you recommend the experience?
Yes, building the bicycle from scratch was a fun and rewarding challenge. Each step of the project had its own difficulties and skills required, but the instructions were a good guide through the project. I would recommend completing the project if you like to create things (and if you want all of your friends to ask if you are crazy).

What did you find most difficult about your bike build?
The most difficult part of the build was aligning the frame. I thought I was precise in my measurements and careful with getting everything lined up, but the geometry of the rear triangle definitely ended up a little wonky (nothing that i couldn't work through though). part of the difficulty was the struggles that I experienced with the jig. I am glad that bamboo bicycle club is continuing to update the instructions and jigs, but the current jig setup needs a bit of refinement still.

What was the easiest part of the build?
The easiest part of the build was deciding what style of bike to build. I am an avid cyclist and have a road bike and a mountain bike, so going with the gravel seemed like an obvious choice.

How would you describe the ride of your finished bike?
The ride is great! it is comfortable and fun to ride. It is not the lightest bike bt it doesnt need to be and it certainly feels nimble while pedaling.

What would you improve about the build experience or your finished bike?
One area that could be improved about the build experience is the jigs. For me, they were difficult to assemble and i broke several of the pieces while trying to put them together. Additionally, i had to make some educated guesses to put them together the correct way and get the spacing correct.
