Paul's Gravel Frame Build

Paul's Gravel Frame Build
Bamboo Bike Build Interview

What made you decide to build a bamboo bike?

I am a retired engineer with time to spare and a long time love of cycling.

Did you enjoy building the bicycle from scratch and would you recommend the experience?

Yes and yes.

What did you find most difficult about your bike build?

Cutting the joint miters took considerable time. I ended up using a sanding drum on a Dremel tool.

What was the easiest part of the build?

Finishing the frame. I used a clear gloss polyurethane spray.

How would you describe the ride of your finished bike?

Excellent. The frame feels strong while smooth on rough roads and gravel.

What would you improve about the build experience or your finished bike?

I tried to wrap the joints with the frame in the jig and the results were not pretty due to limited access and visibility. I should have removed the frame from the jig to wrap. I may grind the wrapping off and redo to improve appearance if I need something to do but the somewhat messy looking joints add character and have survived two years of riding
